A staggering 16 million Americans will be turning 65 over the next four years—and some of them might opt to spend their golden years with some sand between their toes.
And while beach towns have long been popular destinations for retirees, many coastal getaways have become unaffordable. And not all are geared toward older people who want to live near healthcare providers or take advantage of lower tax rates.
That’s why it’s important to carefully explore the options when on the hunt for a forever home by the sea.
To help homebuyers pinpoint the best beach towns for their retirement years, Realtor.com combed through Census data to find coastal areas with a large share of households where residents are 55 and older. We also analyzed Realtor.com listing data from May 2024 for the places where properties sell for a low price per square foot. From there, we chose one city per metro area, focusing on zip codes with at least 20 listings.
