Listing of the Day

Location: Carmel, California

Price: $7.995 million

Perched high above the Pacific Ocean in California’s Carmel Highlands, a house called Stonewater—one of the area’s oldest properties—is on the market for nearly $8 million.

Built in 1919, the home was designed by Carmel-by-the-Sea impressionist painter John O’Shea, who lived in the house with friend, socialite and patron of the arts Elizabeth Bigelow. O’Shea and Bigelow hosted James Franklin Devendorf, Carmel’s original developer, along with creatives instrumental in establishing Carmel as an artist’s colony, said listing agent Dillon Staples of Compass.

Stonewater has been refurbished and includes all the modern conveniences, however wood paneling and several original stone fireplaces remain intact. Likewise, the facade still reflects early 20th-century Spanish style. Featuring winding stairways, surrounding gardens and several outdoor fireplaces, the property’s exterior is enchanting, showcasing impressive vistas.

“The most unique part of this home is its endless amounts of indoor and outdoor entertaining space,” Staples said. A series of nano doors “invite the dramatic views of Wildcat Cove into the living space.”

The property also boasts an A-list celebrity neighbor. Brad Pitt owns a historic Carmel home, known as the DL James House, right next door.

“The DL James House and Stonewater are only a couple hundred yards apart,” Staples added. Stonewater went into contract shortly after Staples spoke with Mansion Global, though the home has yet to close.

Stats

Offering 3,652 square feet, the main residence has four bedrooms, including two primary suites, and three and a half bathrooms. The guest house has one bedroom and one bathroom.

Amenities

Lines blur between the indoors and outdoors and elaborate stonework elevates the property. Expansive rooms open to outside spaces revealing sweeping water views. Several indoor fireplaces introduce character and charm, a skylit room with bookshelves is ideal for a home office, and home chefs will appreciate the well-designed kitchen with copper fixtures and accents.

On the exterior, multiple patios, terraces, outdoor fireplaces and a hot tub are ideal for hosting al fresco soirees, and a small on-site vineyard is a bonus for oenophiles. The home has a detached two-car garage and additional space provides plenty of parking.

Neighborhood notes

Set in Monterey County, 8 miles south of Monterey and just 3.5 miles from Carmel, the Carmel Highlands is a quaint yet upscale community with a population of just over 1,000, per the U.S. Census Bureau. The area offers plenty of shopping, dining choices, fitness facilities and wellness spots.

Perhaps the coastal mountain setting is the Carmel Highlands’ greatest allure—the area is a haven for beachgoers and nature enthusiasts.

Revealing more spectacular scenery, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve sits about a mile north of the Carmel Highlands. For additional outdoor pursuits, a 30-minute drive along winding two-lane Route 1 leads to Big Sur, the rocky stretch of coast sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Mountains.
