A midcentury modern abode with a standout design didn’t need much time to entice a buyer.
The four-bedroom, 2.5-bath Bloomington, IN, property was listed in May for $880,000 with Kristi Gibbs, of Century 21 Scheetz. It’s currently in contingent sale status.
Completed in 1970, the 2,584-square-foot home was devised by modernist architect Earl Flansburgh, who designed Cornell University’s campus store and was a university trustee.
The sellers, who are the home’s third owners, bought the place in 2020 for $550,000. They’re letting it go before a relocation to Europe.

Musical conductor Leonard Bernstein might have even had a tie to the house, which sits on a wooded, .67-acre lot.
“People say he finished his last masterpiece in the office,” Gibbs shares.
The property certainly could inspire creativity, as it’s a “true piece of art” itself, the listing notes.
“The sellers are excited about the next chapter in their life, but this house is very special [to them],” Gibbs says. “Everything was original when they bought it. The previous owner had stewarded it as a midcentury modern and was able to maintain the integrity of the home by not doing any crazy renovations.”
That said, a 2020 remodel helped bring the home up to modern standards while retaining its architectural features. New roofing, insulation, and flooring (oak and terrazzo) were added, along with an enlarged back deck and custom kitchen cabinetry. All of the baths remain original to the home.
“The kitchen was closed off before and separated from the dining space,” says Gibbs. “In order to modernize it and keep within the vein of the design, they still have a galley kitchen but were able to open it up to the dining space.”
The home’s next owner might also want to replace the original windows for improved energy efficiency.
Among the pool of hopeful buyers were people affiliated with Indiana University, Gibbs notes. The intact original design helped drive interest.
“People have taken really good care of the home,” she says.
