Armie Hammer ‘Can’t Afford’ Gas After Scandal Fallout—but What Became of His Staggering Property Portfolio?

Disgraced Hollywood actor Armie Hammer just laid bare the toll of his shocking fall from grace. He took to Instagram to candidly confess that he is being forced to sell his truck and downsize his apartment, as he returns to Los Angeles to start a “new life” in the wake of his sexual assault scandal.
Hammer, 38, who is the great-grandson of oil tycoon Armand Hammer, was accused of sexual assault and even cannibalism by multiple women in 2021—accusations he has repeatedly denied.
The “Call Me by Your Name” star never faced criminal charges over the sordid accusations, but the fallout from the scandal saw his once-illustrious career blown apart.
In his Instagram video, Hammer was blunt about his financial state, telling his followers that he was offloading the truck he bought himself “as a Christmas gift” in 2017 because he can no longer “afford the gas” to run it.
“So I’ve been back in L.A. for a couple of weeks now,” he began his video, while showing off his black pickup truck. “I bought this for myself in 2017 as a Christmas gift for myself. I’ve had pickup trucks for a long time, and I have loved this truck intensely and taken it camping and across country multiple times and on long road trips.

“And I took it for one last road trip to CarMax. This is not an ad for CarMax. This is because I am selling my truck,” he continued. “Since being back in L.A., I have put about $400 or $500 worth of gas in it and I can’t afford it. I can’t afford the gas anymore.”
Hammer went on to share several poignant memories that are tied to the car, from bringing his children home from the hospital to enjoying cross-country adventures.
However, he noted that the sale of the vehicle marks a new chapter in his life—one that began on his birthday, Aug. 28, in a new home in L.A.
“So, Aug. 28, I will be starting my birthday in a new car, in a new apartment, in a new life in Los Angeles,” the father of two, who was living in the Cayman Islands until his recent return to California, said.
‘Grateful’ for a change
Following the accusations that cost him his acting career, Hammer told the “Painful Lessons” podcast that he’s “grateful” for the reckoning.
“I never knew how to give myself self-validation, but I had this job where I was able to get it from so many people that I never had to learn how to give it to myself,” the star said on the podcast.
Although he isn’t getting work in Hollywood, Hammer is apparently writing his own screenplay.

New normal?
His latest Instagram post offers a shocking glimpse of the many ways in which Hammer’s life has changed in recent years. Not only was he once hailed as one of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars, he was also born into a life of wealth and privilege.
Armand Hammer, his great-grandfather, was believed to have been worth around $800 million at the time of his death in 1990, and Hammer’s late father, Michael, was reported to have inherited around $180 million of that fortune.
During his childhood, and indeed the more successful years of his on-screen career, Hammer enjoyed the high life—including residing in a spread of staggering properties, some of which remain in his family’s portfolio to this day.
A cool Tudor in Los Angeles
In 2019, when Hammer was married to Elizabeth Chambers, the couple purchased an English-style Tudor in Los Angeles for $4,715,000.
The seven-bedroom residence spans 6,275 square feet across three stories on a “prime” Hancock Park cul-de-sac ending in the Wilshire Country Club.
Built in 1927, the home features a number of original elements, including stained-glass windows, hardwood floors, and moldings.

The gated and hedged property incudes an attached garage and carport. Inside, the two-story entry features a dramatic staircase, a double-height living room with a beamed ceiling, and a fireplace.
Other highlights include a library, a wood-paneled dining room, a kitchen with a center island and an adjacent breakfast room, and a family room with glass doors leading to the patio and pool, spa, and waterfall.
Upstairs, the primary suite includes a fireplace, built-in closets, and a sauna along with an en suite bath.

A year after they purchased the home, the couple announced on Instagram that they’d split in July 2020.
“Thirteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners and then parents. It has been an incredible journey, but together, we’ve decided to turn the page and move on from our marriage. As we enter into this next chapter, our children and relationship as co-parents and dear friends will remain our priority,” the statement reads in part.
The couple listed the stunning home in September 2020 for $5.8 million, about a million more than what they paid the year before.
The following month, they dropped the price to $5.3 million. Later in the year, it dipped to just under $5 million. It was finally sold for $4.7 million in 2021.
Hammer family mansion in Los Angeles
Hammer’s parents, Dru Hammer and Michael Armand Hammer, divorced in 2012 after 27 years of marriage. (His father died of cancer in 2022 at the age of 67.)
Hammer is the heir to an oil fortune, and a family name that’s part of the L.A. landscape (think the Hammer Museum). He grew up surrounded by wealth, first in the Cayman Islands and later in Southern California. However, he’s admitted that despite his privileged upbringing, he’s not supported by his family’s money.
As for real estate, his parents owned a home in Los Angeles before selling it in 2007 for $13.7 million, reportedly to Kelsey Grammer and his then-wife Camille Grammer. Grammer tried to flip it the year after he bought it and listed it as recently as 2013. It appears as if Grammer still owns the place
The seven-bedroom mansion features a dramatic living area, media room, and dining room. The chef’s kitchen is adjacent to a family area, which offers access to the gym. Outside the 10,500-square-foot mansion, set on just under an acre, is a large grassy yard, pool, along with a six-car motor court and a four-car garage.

The real estate investor has another condo on the market in nearby West Palm Beach, FL, which she’s selling for $695,000.
Dru purchased the apartment just last April for $510,000.
She filled the interior with pops of pink decor and fun graphics, such as a giant “yes” sign on the kitchen, and personal touches, such as monogrammed towels in the bath.
This one-bedroom condo features new stainless-steel appliances, lighting fixtures, porcelain flooring, two balconies, underground parking, and personal storage room. Building amenities include 24/7 valet service and security, a front desk, a concierge, a fitness facility, and a pool.
