Tease those bangs and press play on your favorite Michael J. Fox flick. This 1980s architecture is guaranteed to take you back to the future.

Architect Ralph A. Anderson, who also worked on the Houston Astrodome stadium, debuted this 3,294-square-foot contemporary dwelling in Houston’s Mid West neighborhood in 1988.

The eye-catching home was recently listed for $465,000 and is pending sale.

“We had offers within 12 hours of listing,” says Mark Fontenot, of Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty–Central Houston Brokerage. “I was surprised. I knew it was [either going to be] so popular, or it would sit on the market for six months, because it was unique and different.”

‘Sleek, contemporary’ design

That “unique and different” quality turned out to be the one-bedroom, 2.5-bath townhouse’s selling point. Fontenot says buyers were drawn to the home’s “sleek, contemporary design.”

The steel-framed, brick home has had just two owners.

Within the last few years, the house was gifted to Houston Christian University by the estate of the family who commissioned the design from the architect.

‘Last project’

“This property was his last architectural project before he retired,” says Fontenot of Anderson. “He retired and passed away a few years later.”

The home’s open floor plan spans three levels connected by a floating staircase that ascends from the entry, near a half-moon courtyard.

In the sunken living room, a 21-foot ceiling coaxes in natural light.

‘Still pretty much 1988’

“It’s in excellent condition,” Fontenot says. “It’s in original condition. They haven’t changed a thing. It’s still pretty much 1988.”

Some of the original features include a curved, glass-block wall in the entry and a brick surround fireplace. The kitchen’s yellow, silestone countertops and backsplash were imported from Spain.

An elevator to the second floor could easily be expanded to the third floor, Fontenot notes.

The home also has a two-car garage and is just steps from the community pool.

“The design itself is very different from the rest of the community,” Fontenot says.

The interior is a standout because of its size, compared to the surrounding smaller homes, which are “closer to 2,500 square feet,” he adds.

And perhaps unsurprisingly, this ’80s time machine appears to have charmed its next owner

“According to the buyer’s agent, [they] don’t plan to change anything with the house,” Fontenot says.
