Castle Built for Pennsylvania Asbestos Magnate Summons New Owner for $1.3M

An 1893 castle known as Linden Gate in Ambler, PA, is seeking its next owner—someone looking to plunk down $1.3 million.

The 7,102-square-foot, historic home was originally built by Philadelphia-based architect Milton Bean as a wedding gift for the son of a local doctor named Richard Mattison.

The name is probably familiar to Ambler natives: Mattison was half of the famous Keasbey & Mattison Company that sold asbestos-related products on an international scale well into the 20th century, crowning the town with the dubious title of “Asbestos Capital of the World.”

Beyond the alarming asbestos affiliation (the substance wasn’t widely acknowledged as toxic in Mattison’s day), the meticulously renovated residence retains much of its Gilded Age charm.

Lovely Linden Gate

Elegant elements include intricate wainscot ceilings, original tiled fireplaces, and deep window sills. The six-bedroom, four-bathroom layout also has a breakfast nook in the gourmet chef’s kitchen and a carriage house that’s been converted into a garage.

The main level includes a formal dining room with room for 12—the ideal space for dinner parties.

On the second floor, there’s a private office and four bedrooms, including the luxurious primary suite, which boasts a dressing room and an en suite bathroom with heated floors, a glassed-in shower, and clawfoot tub.

The third level offers a family room and wet bar, plus two more bedrooms and a bath.

Serene space

The nearly 1-acre lot also has a private backyard with a custom children’s play set, and the elegant wraparound porch is a true beauty.

Several recent upgrades have elevated the home’s modern comfort standards. Central air conditioning, a boiler, and a large water heater are among those improvements, the listing notes

8 Lindenwold Terrace is within walking distance of downtown Ambler’s shops and restaurants and is convenient for commuters: Train stations and the Pennsylvania Turnpike are within an easy drive.
