Legendary actor and director Paul Newman‘s longtime Manhattan home has been put on the market for the first time in 40 years—and 16 years after the Hollywood icon passed away.
The New York City penthouse, which Newman shared with his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, has been listed for $9,950,000 by the couple’s children. They are handling the sale on behalf of their 94-year-old mother.
Hollywood icon Newman, the star of “Cool Hand Luke” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” died in 2008 at the age of 83.
The “exceptional penthouse” boasts 2,508 square feet of living space and includes two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Newman and his wife spent much of their married life living in it. This listing marks the first time in more than four decades that the Upper East Side property has become available.
Located on Fifth Avenue, the home offers spectacular Central Park and reservoir views, large terraces, a private elevator, and soaring ceilings.

The entry from the “grand gallery” flows to a sun-soaked living room with a wood-burning fireplace on one end and a hidden bar at the other. The entertaining spaces also include a dining room and a large eat-in kitchen.
The terrace outside the kitchen is used for al fresco dining, but plans exist to enclose this terrace as a solarium, which could be enjoyed year-round, the listing notes.
The primary suite also comes with a terrace, ample closet space, and a luxe bath.
Also available for sale is a park-facing, two-bedroom apartment on the ground floor of the building, the listing notes.
The pre-war allure is clear in the design from 1925, done by J.E.R. Carpenter, a leading luxury architect of New York City residential buildings in the early 1900s.
The full-service building includes 24/7 door attendants, a live-in resident manager, a fitness center, and a bike room. The building’s Carnegie Hill neighborhood is close to Central Park, the cultural attractions along Museum Mile, as well as plenty of restaurants and shopping.

Lucky in love
Newman, with his trademark blue eyes and striking looks, delivered many memorable performances in films such as “Absence of Malice,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” and “The Sting.” He won an Oscar for his role in a later film, “The Color of Money.”
Woodward, who won an Oscar for her turn in “The Three Faces of Eve,” was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She currently resides in Connecticut.
The two starred in “The Long Hot Summer” in 1957, and their chemistry continued off-screen. Newman divorced his wife at the time, Jackie Witte, and married Woodward in 1958.
The two stayed married until his death in 2008.
“He’s very good-looking and very sexy and all of those things, but all of that goes out the window and what is finally left is, if you can make somebody laugh,” Woodward has said of her longtime mate. “And he sure does keep me laughing.”
Newman had reportedly said that their relationship success was “some combination of lust and respect and patience. And determination.”
Noble Black and Jennifer Kaufman Stillman with Douglas Elliman hold the listing.
