At the apex of Midwest elegance sits the nine-bedroom Olin Mansion on a 32-acre retreat worthy of presidential guests. The 1927 mansion in Alton, IL, was built by John Olin, a noted industrialist of the early and mid-20th century.

The 20,235-square-foot home was listed in June for $8,450,000.

“The family business was gunpowder and chemical manufacturing,” says listing agent Don Brown, with Stotler Brown of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty. “Multiple U.S. presidents and celebrities are rumored to have visited the residence.”

Olin died in 1982 at the age of 89. The property last changed hands in 2007 for $1,890,500, Realtor.com® data shows.

Any high-profile guests these days will surely enjoy the property’s latest luxe improvements.

Underground tunnel

The 2013 renovations included an underground tunnel connecting the main residence to the guesthouse, as well as an all-new, 11-car garage. Thanks to the tunnel, there’s no need for visitors to worry about chilly or wet conditions when heading to their accommodations.

In the main house, all seven bedrooms include en suite baths.

And the home’s exterior is just as thoughtfully considered as its interior.

“The home’s entire facade is made of local Mississippi limestone,” says Brown’s business partner, Nic Stotler. “The grounds of the estate are immaculate and have stunning views of the Mississippi River and Illinois River from nearly every vantage point.”

Outdoor oasis

The 96-year-old mansion offers an array of outdoor leisure spaces. There’s a pool and pool house, a kitchen, and several private balconies, all against a Mississippi River backdrop.

“The home is in historic Alton—a quintessential river town with a rich history,” Brown says. “There are two great marinas just minutes down the road, and the property is just 40 minutes to downtown St. Louis.”

It’s also only 15 minutes from a private airstrip and 35 minutes to Lambert International Airport.
