Stephen Malkmus, lead singer of indie rock band Pavement, just put his palatial Portland, OR, home on the market for $1,130,000.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom property is a work of art, boasting a castlelike facade with battlements along the roof.

According to Realtor.com records, the 4,402-square-foot home was built in 1927 and last sold for $447,000 in 2001. It sits on an 8,276-square-foot lot.

Live like royalty

This Mediterranean-inspired abode is fit for royalty, with its hardwood floors, arched doorways, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Each room is more intriguing than the last. For instance, the step-down living room has a stone-accented fireplace and a sculptural chandelier.

However, the pièce de résistance might be the sunroom/reading room in the home’s central turret. It’s where Malkmus filmed a video for an acoustic version of the song “Middle America.”

Elevated details

An eat-in kitchen is quirky yet stylish, showcasing eye-catching details like butter-yellow cabinetry, custom shelving, and outdoor access via French doors. There’s also a spacious formal dining room.

The second-level primary bedroom suite features a fireplace, a Juliet balcony, and plenty of storage space. The en suite bath has heated floors and a handmade Japanese soaking tub.

Other highlights include lathe-and-plaster walls, original period molding, and pocket doors.

Meanwhile, musicians will be happy to learn that the finished basement easily doubles as a practice space. There’s also an oversized garage transformed into a heated artist’s studio.

Of course, the outdoor space is also something to write home about. There’s a streetside garden with irrigated beds and a flagstone patio.

Malkmus, 58, co-founded Pavement in 1989, releasing five albums and 10 EPs before the group disbanded in 1999. He went solo and released a number of acclaimed albums over the past couple of decades. Pavement still tours semiregularly and had a successful run of live shows in 2022 and 2023.
